My buddy was recently playing fetch with his pup when he noticed something strange. He said his dog was humping a sex doll he had in the living room!He was so embarrassed that he called me over.I couldn’t help but laugh a bit, but then I realized how serious this was.He was worried his dog was either frustrated or seeking something that it didn’t have—like sexual release.
I knew I had to figure out what was going on so I asked him some questions.Did his pup show any other signs of frustration or seeking pleasure?Did he give his pup enough exercise or attention? How about playtime? And most importantly, was the pup neutered?
My buddy said that the pup did have a lot of playful energy and was desexed, so that cleared up one thing at least. We then looked back at the pup’s past and figured out that it may have learned this behaviour by spending a little too much time around a family friend’s pup that was humping the furniture. We realised that it wasn’t seeking sexual gratification, sex dolls but it had learned the behaviour from another dog.
We quickly moved the doll out of the pup’s reach and tried to find other things to occupy it.We gave it more toys, took it outside to exercise and play, and kept it busy with interactive puzzle games. It was effortless to distract it from the habit and we made sure to avoid any other triggers.
My buddy and I decided to keep a closer eye on the pup and make sure that it didn’t revert back to humping anything inappropriate. We also made sure to not laugh about the situation too much, or to punish the pup; it didn’t know any better. It was our responsibility to make sure the pup was well taken care of and that we kept an eye out for any signs of frustration.
Seeing the pup take an interest in the sex doll did make me think, dildos however. Why is it that a pup, without access to another dog, seeks out objects to hump? Is it because they are looking for pleasure, out of boredom, or because of something else?It made me realize how important it is for dogs to have well-rounded lives, filled with exercise, games, and socialization. It’s easy to forget how intelligent our furry companions are, so we have to make sure to provide them with the opportunity to express themselves.
